Paper Submission Instructions

The American Maritain Association invites proposals for papers to be delivered at its 34th annual international conference to be held in Canton, OH, Thursday – Saturday, October 14-16, 2010.

Sponsored by Walsh University, this year’s conference theme is “Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of Scholasticism and Politics.” While papers may be on any topic of philosophical merit, conference participants are encouraged to examine this book and reflect on the vast range of topics indicated by the titles of the essays in it.  Maritain was a master at identifying essential distinctions, and with only one exception (his essay, “The Thomist Idea of Freedom”), every one of the remaining ten essays in this book is defined by a title that sets one concept in relation to another.  Examples include: “Science and Philosophy,” “The Human Person and Society,” “Democracy and Authority,” and “Action and Contemplation,” to name just a few.  Check out this rich little volume; there are so many wonderful essays in it and they suggest a wide variety of additional topics and themes.

Paper presentations at the conference should be limited to 25 minutes reading time, with 15 minutes for discussion.  To submit an electronic proposal abstract of 500 words or less, please visit: the proposal submission site. In order to receive full consideration, proposals should be completed online by no later than June 30th 2010. Questions regarding the submission of proposals should be directed to the Program Chair: Dr. Gavin Colvert, Associate Professor, Philosophy Department, Assumption College, 500 Salisbury St., Worcester, MA 01609 (email: gcolvert@assumption.edu).

A special invitation is extended to graduate students.  A stipend of $250.00 will be awarded to a graduate student paper selected for presentation by the Program Committee.  In order to be considered for this award, please indicate your interest at the time of the submission of your completed paper.  Papers will be evaluated by the Program Committee prior to the conference. The award recipient will be announced and the stipend awarded at the conference.

In addition, the AMA extends an invitation to societies or individuals interested in organizing a satellite session for the 2010 conference.  Complete details regarding the submission of satellite session proposals are available at the web address indicated above.

The conference venue: Canton, Ohio is home to the National First Ladies Museum (directly across the street from the conference hotel), the National Pro Football Hall of Fame, and numerous colleges and universities.  The Thursday and Friday conference sessions will be held at the McKinley Grand Hotel; wonderful accommodations with really affordable rates.  On Saturday, participants will travel to the beautiful campus of Walsh University.  The conference venue is conveniently accessible from The Akron-Canton Airport, with free shuttle service to the hotel!  More exciting details to come in June!
